I just added a 6 speed to my arsenal. I’ve owned, in no particular order: a 2 speed auto, a 3 speed auto, 4 auto, 3 on floor, 3 on tree, 4 on floor, 5 speed, 6 speed and A CVT (one speed)

3/4/6 speed autos and 5/6 speed manuals. No manual column shifts. Have had 3/4 speed autos in both column and console shifter variations. 6 speed auto was console shifter.

The 3/tree setup is an elegant weapon, from a more civilized time. Usually they’re all fucked up and they suck, mine was snickety-snick tight, then that was it beacause you could only shift twice.

3-speed auto (really a 4-speed box with a burned up 2nd gear clutch pack, so the car’s computer defaulted to a 1-3-4 shift pattern)
4-speed auto, more than once
5-speed auto, more than once
6-speed auto
5-speed manual, more than once
6-speed manual

I hit 54 km/hr on my 28 speed. (no grade, prairie tailwind, maximum leg speed in 28th, on 28 inch tires It almost killed me, have never gotten even close since) not a bike guy, I may even have been wearing a toque and parka but I WANNA GO FAST!

oh that makes sense. I’m going to look at a red 85 2wd shorty in Albuquerque if it’s still there at easter. Damn near a clone of what mine should look like.

Automatics all the way from 2 gears up to 6 (including a 3 gear/4 range slim jim), but all of my manuals have been 5 on the floor. Owning a 3 on the tree is a bucket list item for me...

4 speed manual
5 speed manual (x3)
6 speed manual
3 speed automatic

4-speed auto (1)
5-speed manual (1)
6-speed manual (1)
5-speed auto (2; 1 by marriage)
The 5-speed auto was only my daily for 2.5 months, bringing my time with auto DDs to ~8.5 years. The 5-speed manual was my DD for 8.5 years. My 6-speed manual has been my DD for 3 years.

4-speed auto, 5-speed auto, 5-speed auto with low range, 6-speed auto, 5-speed manual, and a 6-speed manual. Pretty normal stuff, really.

I’ve actually driven a 394 ultra high compression rocket slim jim combo. was one of the highlights of being 16. My friend said the tranny was the weal link, but that engine was a FUCKING MONSTER that boogied that super 88 down the road.
![]() 02/23/2018 at 23:57 |

Yeah - mine was a ‘64 Dynamic 88 coupe - all of that, but just a 2 barrel carb, so only 280 HP (gross).
Was a great car though - stunning red interior and I still think it’s the best highway cruiser I’ve ever owned.

this was my friend’s mom’s 64 super 88, navy/white roof/light metallic blue inside. it was just gorgeous.

60's to early 70's Oldsmobiles are really great cars.
It still amuses me to think about bombing around on the interstates in that car with no seatbelts. Seems weird now, but I never gave it a thought at the time.

2 speed, 3 speed, 4 speed, 5 speed, 7 speed autos.

4AT, 4AT, 5MT, 5MT, 6MT.
Both 4ATs were technically the same units (4T40-E/4T45-E)...
Thankfully no CVTs at all.

Good old Type A!!
The other issue with the Roto Hydramatic is the ratios - there’s a huge difference in the ratio between 1st and 2nd gear (2nd/3rd range). The feeling is like skipping a gear when it makes that shift.
The shift pattern always amused me- PNDSLR. They standardized on PRNDL not long after that-
![]() 02/24/2018 at 00:29 |

I remember the scary reverse at the bottom pattern, this was the mid 90's so the selector was not so tight.
![]() 02/24/2018 at 00:35 |
|
Mine was in the early 90s - I got lucky and found a really nice, rust free car with an immaculate interior for $1,600. Gear selector worked fine in that car, you just had to pay attention to avoid going the wrong way.
![]() 02/24/2018 at 00:38 |

My buddy liked to drop it into first already rolling, it was dodgu with reverse right under it.

13 years ago...me...sat in a parking lot of a Lexus dealer with my 2001 Audi S4. It had a 6 speed manual. I had 0 idea where Reverse was.
I had to sit there and be a moron trying to figure out how to push down and get the gear in place and not lose my front end on the very close concrete I was parked on. It took 15 minutes.

Interesting question!
4-speed fwd auto
4-speed 4wd auto with mechanical low range
Numerous rwd 5-speed manuals
5-speed 4wd auto with electronically actuated low range
5-speed rwd auto
6-speed rwd hydraulic sequential
7-speed rwd multiclutch, which is basically a 6-speed shiftable auto with an extra low gear and wet clutch for burnouts
8-speed awd auto

Owned? 1 5spd manual. Driven? Dog-leg 5 gear in an Iveco Turbo Daily, dual range 5-speed in a Landcruiser, 3-speed automatic very briefly, and Toyota’s Hybrid CVT(holy shit the lag when you floored it before anything happens)
![]() 02/24/2018 at 08:34 |

Let’s see...
5 speed manual, 4 speed automatic, 5 speed automatic, 6 speed manual, and technically a six speed automatic (although the transmission control module only uses 5 forward clutch pack combinations. Try to guess what that bag of crazy is in...)

Hmm since we’re counting number of speeds as different types I guess Ives owned quite a few... 3, 4 and 5 speed autos (both 4 speeds were column shift, the 3 and 5 on the floor), 5 and 6 speed manuals and a CVT.

No, I had little choice. Either Focus diesel wagon manual or Renault Megane diesel wagon manual. I don’t think you could get an automatic, maybe unless you had a medical reason or so. I worked at a government though, most companies give people more freedom.
Disclaimer: I live in Europe.
